The late Alonzo Dennis Graham was born to the late M. G. Graham and the late Mae Frances Graham
Brown of Lake City, South Carolina. He graduated from Carver High School in 1970. Upon graduating
from Carver High School, he attended Virginia Union University in Richmond Virginia and received a
Bachelor of Science Degree in History. While attending Virginia Union University he pledged and
became a member of Groove-Phi- Groove Social Fraternity.
Alonzo’s employment history consisted of being employed at the South Carolina School for Boys in
Florence, S.C. as a counselor; employment with the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice R&E
Center in Columbia, S. C. as a counselor; employment with South Carolina Department of Disabilities and
Special Needs; employment with the Virginia Department of Corrections as a counselor; employment
with the Florence County Department of Disabilities and Special Needs Board. His most recent
employment was with Ronald McNair Nursing Center as Director of Maintenance, and South Carolina
Department of Mental Health as a Mental Health Counselor.
At a very young age, Alonzo became a member of Greater St. James AME Church where he has been a
lifetime member. He was a member of the Young Adult Choir, and later became a member of the Men’s
Chorus. Alonzo was a proud member of the Usher Board, and a member of the Trustee Board where he
has served for several years as Chairman-Pro-Temp of the Trustee Board. He was also the Assistant
Class leader for the Probationary Class which provides instructional guidance for new members who join
the church. Alonzo was also a member of the Sons of Allen.
His memories will be cherished by his wife, Mary C. Graham, a son, Alonzo Ellwood Graham (Jelina), a
son who preceded him in death, Keyon Mitchell, three sisters, Kertrina A. Graham of Florence, South
Carolina, Dr. Cheryl G. Watkins of Richmond Virginia, Mildred Watson (Dante) of Miami Florida, six
brothers Leonard Graham of Charlotte, N.C, Anthony Graham (Yvette) of South Mill, North Carolina,
Barry A. Graham (Debra) of Easley, South Carolina, Rufus Graham of New York, Maxi Graham (April), and
Al Woodberry (Beverly) of Miami Florida; two brothers who preceded him in death, Mitchell Graham
and Melvin Woodberry, of Miami Florida; three grandchildren, Jalen Graham, Addyson Graham, and
Aidyn Graham of Liverpool New York; five nieces and two nephews, a devoted aunt, Carolyn McMillan of
Florence, S.C., a host of other relatives including aunts, uncles, and cousins.
