Mary Etta Graham, daughter of the late Luke McCray & Robertha Rush was born on
July 18, 1920, in Olanta, Florence County, South Carolina. She departed this life on
Monday, July 20, 2020, at Lake City Community Hospital in Lake City. Mrs. Mary Etta
was predeceased by her five sisters (Idus McCray, Rose Emma McKenzie (James),
Albertha Gamble (William), Minnie Mae Nero (Frank) and Elizabeth Singletary (Mott)
and by two brothers (Carson McCray (Rosa Lee) and Robert C. McCray), and is
survived by one brother (Elmore McCray (Flossie) of Boynton Beach, FL).
Mrs. Mary Etta married Elder Harris Millard Graham on February 13, 1937, and
remained married until his passing in 1993 -- a total of 56 years. From this union they
were blessed with six boys. Three sons who predeceased her were Harris (Delphine),
Edward Roosevelt, and Myers. She leaves behind three surviving sons; Ellis (Alberta) of
Olanta, SC; William (Delphine) of Olanta, SC; and James Anthony (Lorraine) of
Columbia, SC. Mrs. Mary Etta was a proud grandmother of 30 grandchildren and 56
great grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends whom
she loved dearly. Mrs. Mary Etta also raised within her home six of her grandchildren
as her own (Lynn Graham, Glen Graham, Winifred Graham, Craig Graham, Tamika
Graham-Lee and Ederio Graham).
Mrs. Mary Etta was a member of the St. Mark Believes Holiness Church for 83 years
and as a child she was a member of the Jerusalem Baptist Church.
She enjoyed baking homemade cakes, pies, biscuits and tea cakes. She also enjoyed
canning and sewing. She loved helping people and spending time with family and
friends. She remained a vibrant and active participant in her community throughout her
life. At age 94 she made one hundred of her delicious homemade biscuits for the Lake
City Senior Mothers’ Day Breakfast.
Mrs. Mary Etta was a pillar of the Olanta and Lake City Communities, residing in this
area for 100 years. She recently received the Certificate of Recognition from the St.
Mark Believers Holiness Church, and she was also given a Florence County, District
One, Resolution and Recognition Proclamation. Further, the city of Lake City
proclaimed July 18 th as Mrs. Mary Etta Graham Day.
